As Western Australian Rotary approaches its landmark centenary in 2027, the Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) program continues to prove that an international exchange isn't just a "year in a life"—it is a "life in a year."

While the outbound class of 2027 is finalized, the RYE cycle never stops. An exchange program is a two-way bridge, and there are vital ways the Rotary Club of Palm Beach and our local community can step up to power future programs right now.

1. The Four Non-Negotiable Pillars

For students generally aged 15 to 18.5, this 12-month program remains one of the world's most comprehensive youth leadership immersions:

• Age & Duration (12 Months): A full year abroad builds authentic resilience and deep cultural integration beyond the "honeymoon" phase.
• Host Family Living: Living with two to four host families provides daily practice in adaptability and interpersonal diplomacy.
• Local Schooling: Attending secondary classes in a foreign language fosters extraordinary cognitive agility.
• Ambassadorship: Students represent Palm Beach and Rotary on the global stage, upholding the Four-Way Test.

2. Cultural Immersion & The "6 Be’s"

To combat homesickness, District 9423 students are trained in the proven "6 Be’s" framework:

• Be First: Take the initiative to introduce yourself.
• Be Curious: Seek to understand traditions before judging.
• Be on Purpose: Remain clear about your goals and personal growth.
• Be Grateful: Practice daily gratitude for the generosity of your hosts.
• Be of Service: Volunteer and give back to your host community.
• Be Here Now: Live fully in the moment rather than fixating on home.

3. Safety Standards & The "5 D's"

Rotary upholds comprehensive Youth Protection protocols. Every participant is assigned a dedicated club Mentor (Counsellor). In return, all students abide by the zero-tolerance 5 D's. Violation results in immediate termination:

• No Drugs: Zero tolerance for illegal substances.
• No Driving: Strict prohibition on operating motorized vehicles or watercraft.
• No Dating: Exclusive romantic entanglements are prohibited (group socializing is encouraged).
• No Drinking: Prohibited, except in strict moderation with host parents during formal cultural meals where legal.
• No Disfigurement / Vaping: Tattoos/piercings, smoking, and vaping are strictly forbidden.

4. Exceptional Rotary Value

While commercial exchanges can exceed $25,000, Rotary’s volunteer model keeps costs accessible. The estimated budget of ~$12,000 AUD covers return flights, comprehensive insurance, visa paperwork, and uniforms. Host families donate 12 months of room and board, tuition is waived, and host clubs furnish a monthly pocket-money allowance (~$100 USD equivalent).
